Portland PHnw Team Hosts Public Educational Events

By Beth Campbell, PHnw Board Memeber

Part of the mission of Passive House Northwest is to provide education by promoting the benefits of high performance construction. PHnw Portland has been busy with a couple of cool public presentations over the past month.

In February, Let's Talk Climate, a local group focused on climate change education, hosted a panel of experts to discuss the topic “Aiming for Carbon Zero”. Portland’s Climate Action goals call for all new buildings to achieve zero-net carbon emissions by 2030. But can it be done? Panelists discussed how Passive House standards can, indeed, be met in both single and multi-family housing and commercial construction, and gave examples of communities around the globe that have achieved Carbon Zero targets. Topics ranged from retrofitting old homes and climate change, to municipal code and our children's future.

On the panel were Michael Armstrong, Senior Sustainability Manager, City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability; Jessica Woodruff, Director of Housing Development of REACH; Alexander Boetzel, Board Member of Passive House Northwest and Chief Operation Officer of Green Hammer; Josh Salinger, Vice President of Passive House Northwest and Founder and President of Birdsmouth Construction.

In January, Passive House Northwest presented to a room of home energy auditors at the Home Performance Conference in Portland. One attendee commented, “Thanks for presenting at the HPC this year. I attended with a colleague, that I have been preaching Passive House to for years, and you guys reached him. Our discussion continued afterward with a brain storm session on how we might bring this concept into our realm of low-income weatherization. Thank you for that.” Passive House Northwest board member-presenters were Scott Kosmecki, Founder of Hinge Build Group; Josh Salinger, Founder and President of Birdsmouth Construction; Beth Campbell, Project Manager at Birdsmouth Construction.
