Please join us Friday, November 18th for the first PHnw conference east of the Cascades!  We’re bringing together regional governments, utilities providers, developers, and the design and construction community to discuss high-performance, low-energy passive house buildings - big and small - within the inland region.  This exciting one-day conference will focus on strengthening regional expertise and awareness of passive buildings.

The keynote presentation will be “On Buildings, Swans, and the Power of Arithmetic” by Zack Semke.  Both the impacts of climate change and the means of climate action are rife with non-linear change. How do we chart a path forward as designers, builders, and building “consumers” chart a path across these unpredictable waters? Zack will delve into the world of vicious circles and virtuous cycles, fossil fuel intransigence and technology revolutions, stranded assets and fossil fuel price curves, to draw the line that connects Passive House with real hope for climate security.

Zack serves as Chief Marketing Officer at NK Architect, a firm based in Seattle and Pittsburgh that is dedicated to proven methods of building climate hope through architecture and construction. Zack earned his BA from Stanford University in 1993, majoring in Human Biology with a concentration in Human Ecology. He began his professional career as the first staffer of the Coalition for a Livable Future, a Portland-based coalition of environmental, affordable housing, transportation reform, and smart growth advocacy organizations that successfully advanced an ambitious suite of progressive planning policies at the regional level. Zack also serves on the Passive House NW board and chairs its policy committee.
